Delhi Government launches Aam Aadmi School Clinics

The Delhi Government has launched Aam Aadmi School Clinics, a never-seen-before initiative in India to promote mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of school students. On Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia along with Health Minister Satyendar Jain inaugurated 20 Aam Aadmi School Clinics at an event held at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Moti Bagh. These 20 clinics are a part of a pilot project implemented by the Delhi Government in collaboration with The Hans Foundation. On this occasion, Dy CM Manish Sisodia highlighted the need of mental health support for students within the school premises.

Health Minister Satyendar Jain also laid the focus on how mental health services will impact the future of this country. He said that the Aam Aadmi School Clinics are an extension of Mohalla Clinics & have been started with the aim of providing biannual health checkups to our school students. Apart from this, for the first time, the focus will be laid on mental well being along with physical health through the medium of Aam Aadmi School Clinics. A healthy mind will contribute to a healthy society and ultimately a healthier nation.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said, “This initiative is one of the biggest achievements in the field of education and health sector. There has been a lot of work and major developments that have been done in the field of health and education that has been globally acknowledged. The Aam Aadmi School Clinics consists of doctors and psychologists who listen to the problems of students. Having a psychologist is one of the biggest steps because it will be an addition to our happiness curriculum. All the forces have come together from parents to society and hospitals that have joined hands to safeguard the future of this nation.”

Health Minister Satyendar Jain said, “The program is carefully crafted to cater to young students keeping in mind their physical and mental health needs. It aims to provide health care by providing regular full-body health checkups by trained professionals, guidance on health management by Doctors, group awareness sessions on issues like stress management, and individual therapy sessions by a Psychologist. It not only aims to bring about a change in the overall development but works on building a stronger future by empowering students. The initiative aims to make state of art healthcare both accessible and accountable for the students.

He further added, “Only a healthy mind can lead to a healthy body & in turn to a healthier society. We have initially started with this intervention for students, but we will think about extending these services for teachers as well as parents in the coming future.”

What is an ‘Aam Aadmi School Clinic ?

Aam Aadmi School Clinic is a unique first-of-its-kind project in the whole country. It is currently being executed in 20 schools of the Delhi government and will be further established in more schools around Delhi. The Aam Aadmi School Clinic is an initiative to bring a holistic well-being care program, specifically designed for students.

Aam Aadmi School Clinic is a state-of-the-art clinic built in a Porta Cabin within the premises of the school itself. Each clinic will have a trained doctor, ANM, Psychologist & Multi-Task Worker. ANM will be responsible for screening the students for any physical as well as mental health issues. In case of a physical health issue, ANM will refer the student to the doctor, whereas to the psychologist in case you have any mental health concerns.

The Aam Aadmi School Clinics will have a variety of features including : Availability of a Psychologist along with the doctor; Easily accessible healthcare services within school premises; Focus on early diagnosis and treatment; Free consultation, free medicines, free screening, free treatment, free first aid services with a robust referral system to higher hospitals; Well qualified & trained staff; Biannual follow up of every student; Special focus on detection of anaemia, malnutrition, refractive errors and menstrual hygiene; Special focus on detection of mental health problems, stress related to mental health, career, COVID pandemic etc. and provision of  counselling services to students for the same.

The Aam Aadmi School Clinics are equipped with facilities that will cater to the students and help the officials to identify the problems of the students. These clinics screen 30 students each day. On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi School Clinics are equipped with an adequate supply of medicines for the students.  This list has been curated keeping in mind the specific needs of adolescents, with a primary focus on anaemia, malnutrition, refractive errors, worm infestation, and menstrual hygiene. These clinics are equipped with doctors for the early diagnosis of any disease that persists in the students. One of the aims of Aam Aadmi School Clinic is to work on long-term deficiencies and disorders such as anaemia, adolescent diabetes, refractive errors, worm infestation, menstrual hygiene, malnutrition, skin infection, and other diseases as well.

The Aam Aadmi School Clinic is one of the most innovative projects  in the whole country, the AASC focuses on preventive, promotive, curative aspects of physical and mental health within the school premises. Diagnosis at an early age is necessary so that the students can be treated as early as possible. The Aam Aadmi School Clinic will provide health cards to the students to ensure the maintenance of their health portfolio and to ensure ease in higher reference. These clinics function digitally and maintain data on an online web portal through electronic tablets provided to them.

The Aam Aadmi School Clinics professionals’ maintain the E-record of the students on the same portal. In the mental health aspect, these clinics emphasise group sessions and individual counselling sessions. Group sessions focus on varied topics such as self-awareness, interpersonal relationships, stress management, anxiety issues etc of the students.

The students can also approach the psychologist for individual counselling sessions. Psychologists are trained in the field of child and adolescent mental health. On this, Jain said, “I am anticipating that this project will not only prove to be the best one providing healthcare services to students in the country but also in the world and we all will be able to see the results soon”. He further added that, “On this occasion, I would like to convey my heartfelt thanks to our implementation partner-The Hans Foundation for their continuous help & support,” Jain further added.

Delhi government under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal is working continuously towards the development and well-being of each and every student from the grassroots level.  In continuation of these efforts, Delhi Government has launched this innovative project with the support of CSR initiatives of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital Delhi, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited and BSES Yamuna Power Limited.

The Aam Aadmi School Clinics are necessary for the development of each and every student by keeping their mental as well as physical well-being intact. These Aam Aadmi School Clinics will help the students to address their problems so that these problems can be diagnosed at the earliest and necessary & timely treatment could be provided for the same. This will have a long term impact on the future of this country, as healthy children will contribute towards a healthier country.
