Initiative supports the UP Government’s drive for a tobacco-free state
New Delhi, January 25, 2019: In sync with the State Government’s decision of making Uttar Pradesh a tobacco-free state, Nayati Healthcare is collaborating with Tata Memorial Hospital, Biocon and the UP Government in ultimately transforming the Kumbh Mela into a tobacco-free zone.
Consequently, an oral cancer centre has been set up at the Nayati Aarogya Mandir – a 40-bed free
medical camp in the Kumbh area – with advanced equipment for accurately screening and detecting
lesions that indicate potential oral cancer. Nayati’s medical teams are also informing devotees about the serious health hazards of tobacco. Persons screening positive will then be referred to Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital – the best regional cancer in Prayagraj. The patients with complicated cases are being referred to Nayati Medicity, Mathura.
Dr. (Prof) Santanu Chaudhuri, Chairman Centre for Oncology & HOD, Clinical Oncology, Nayati Healthcare said, “Seeing the increasing incidence of all kinds of cancer in Uttar Pradesh, we have set up the state of the art Cancer Care Centre at Nayati Medicity Mathura, bringing medical, surgical and radiation technology for end to end treatment for mass market of Tier II and Tier III cities. Majority of the serious cancer patients comes from different parts of Uttar Pradesh. Today, our association with UP government at Kumbh will help us in treating the complicated cases at our hospital. Our Centre for Oncology is a part of National Cancer Grid under Tata Trust.”

Healthcare, said, “One of the most prevalent forms, oral cancer ranks among the top three cancer
threats in India. Against one million cancer incidents in 2012, 1.15 million were reported nationwide in 2018. In recent years, UP has seen a sudden spurt in oral cancer cases due to rising tobacco consumption in various forms while it also records one of India’s highest cancer burdens. Though rising demographics and better diagnostics account for part of the overall increase, the sharp jump in oral cancer is cause for serious concern. Given this scenario, we strongly support the UP Government’s drive for a tobacco-free state. Therefore, we have set up a free oral cancer screening centre at the Kumbh Mela. We are also sensitizing the seers of all Akharas about the dangers of tobacco consumption and requesting them to spread this information among devotees during their ‘pravachans’ (sermons). Additionally, we are exploring the possibility of the State Government screening an awareness video on oral cancer for the people at Prayagraj as avoiding smoking and tobacco consumption can boost the health and wellbeing of people.”
In a span of 10 days, Nayati Healthcare’s medical camp has recorded 3,100 patient footfalls at Shri Guru Karshni Kumbh Mela Camp in Sector – 7, Prayagraj, which includes Emergency and OPD cases for a variety of serious and common ailments like skin problems, cold and cough, joint and body pain, fever, headache, weakness, respiratory-related issues, loose motion, diabetes, for wounds and dressings and others.
