HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka- a multi-specialty facility, recently performed successful surgery on a 42-year-old female patient. The patient had complaints about difficulty in breathing for the last 5 months and the intensity had increased suddenly for the last 5-7 days. She also reported severe chest pain on the left side, radiating to the back which made it difficult to move around or lie down.
She was diagnosed with an aneurysm of the aorta, which is a condition that causes the artery to dilate. CT Aortography revealed a huge ascending aneurysm of 11 x 10 cm which resulted in compression of the lungs, heart, and tissues around these organs. This condition is life-threatening as it dilates the main blood vessel responsible for supplying blood throughout the body.
In this case, the rupture resulted in the leakage of blood outside the aorta (the blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the whole body). The cardiac surgeons treating her previously were unable to handle the complexity of the case and hence, referred her to higher centres in Delhi where Dr. Yugal Kishore Mishra, Chief of Clinical Services, Head of Cardiac Sciences, and Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon, HCMCT Manipal Hospitals, Dwarka and his team of doctors performed the complex surgery in a carefully crafted manner.
Dr Mishra and his team performed a complex procedure called Bentall’s in which the whole ascending aorta and its valve are completely replaced. This procedure has the risk of 4-5% mortality. In this case, the rupture was at multiple places and was stuck to the heart and the layers surrounding it also had calcified blood clots and the surrounding organs like windpipe and lungs were also compressed due to which the patient was then put on a heart-lung machine through the peripheral vessels.
While talking about the procedure, Dr Yugal Kishore Mishra – Chief of Clinical Services, Head of Cardiac Sciences, and Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon said: “It took us around 10 hours to perform this complex surgery. The post-surgery recovery was satisfactory, and the patient was shifted to an ICU post 72 hours. The patient was happily discharged on the 6th day of the surgery and was able to walk on her own.”
