Noida, June 27, 2018:

In a surgical procedure, Jaypee Hospital once again displayed exemplary skill and expertise in treating a young patient from Kyrgyzstan suffering from Hepatic Alveolar Echinococcosis. Dr. Abhideep Chaudhary, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant Department of Jaypee Hospital along with his team successfully performed living donor liver transplantation surgery.

Taalaibek Alaibek, 19 year old young man from Kyrgyzstan, suffered weight loss of up-to 10 kg which was accompanied by headache, groin and lower limb pains. Observing his deteriorating condition, he consulted local doctors in Kyrgyzstan. In April last year, he was diagnosed with Alveolar Echinococcosis, a tapeworm infection which grows and spreads like a malignant tumor in the liver. Taalaibek’s treatment was started with medicines but later he was advised to undergo liver transplant in view of his adverse condition.

After consulting many doctors in Kyrgyzstan, the patient visited Jaypee Hospital, Noida for his treatment. Dr. Abhideep Chaudhary counseled him to undergo a living donor liver transplantation surgery with IVC replacement to treat his defect. He along with the donor Alaibek Azizbek, his 21 year old brother, was evaluated as per the protocol required for the surgery.

Explaining about the disease, Dr. Abhideep Chaudhary, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant Department, Jaypee Hospital said, “Taalaibek was suffering from Alveolar Echinococcosis which is a chronic parasitic infection that may be lethal sometimes. It is caused by Echinococcus Multilocularis (EM). Basis the evaluation, we recommended him living donor liver transplant with IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) replacement as his IVC was also infiltrated by the parasite. Also, curative surgery option was not possible in his case due to the extended disease; the only treatment option viable was liver transplantation.”

“The patient underwent living donor liver transplant surgery where his elder brother was the donor. It was a critical procedure; we removed the retro-hepatic vena cava with the liver first and then replaced the vena cava with Cadaveric Aortic Graft. The donor was discharged from the hospital after one week of the surgery. At present, Taalaibek is on immunosuppressants and other supportive medications. His liver function is stable now and the CT Triphasic abdomen is within normal limits. The patient is doing fine now and healthy to go back to his country,” adds Dr. Abhideep Chaudhary.

Dr. Chaudhary advised that prior surgeries makes the operation more complicated. Thus, it is important to avoid unnecessary abdominal surgeries for any future transplant cases. The cases of living donor liver transplantation for Hepatic Alveolar Echinococcosis are highly critical. For Liver transplantation with IVC replacement, only 20 cases have been reported so far globally with just one case from India in past.

Mariam Khan(Taalaibek’s mother) said, “Due to the lack of International standard medical facilities in Kyrgyzstan, we decided to visit India for Taalaibek’s condition. Before coming to Jaypee we visited another renowned hospital where post examination, doctor advised treatment via medication for 5 years followed by a surgery. Hearing this feedback, we were worried as we had been collecting money for the treatment from past 6-8 months and had already spent $1500 on hospital visits and tests.”

“After researching about his disease and learning about the successful cases that Dr. Abhideep Chaudhary had performed in the past, we decided to re-consult Taalaibek’s case at Jaypee Hospital and met Dr. Abhideep Chaudhry. Thanks to Dr. Chaudhary and his team for performing my son’s surgery. It is because of the doctors here that today my son is taking steps towards a healthy future” adds Mariam.
