New Delhi, July 11, 2022:

A 64 year old lady suffering from meningitis after lumbar canal stenosis was treated successfully through lumbar drain and clinical management at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. In the month of April, the lady was operated at a local hospital for lumbar canal stenosis, a condition where the spinal canal starts getting narrow at the lower part of the back. However after the surgery her condition deteriorated with complications like recurrent complaints of severe headache, vomiting, confusion, altered behaviour and imbalance while walking.

She was admitted to Apollo on 29th April, 2022 in an unconscious state, decreased sensation, coupled with seizures.  Under the supervision of Dr P.N. Renjen, Senior Consultant, Neurology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals she was intubated for decreased sensorium and was admitted in the ICU due to the episodes of generalised tonic-clonic seizure(GTCS) (convulsions including the whole body) for further clinical management.

Speaking on the same Dr P.N. Renjen, Senior Consultant, Neurology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said, “Lumbar canal stenosis is a spinal injury in which there is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower part of the back. This narrowing can cause pressure on spinal nerves or spinal cord that can ultimately cause pain. In severe cases the patient can have loss of sensation in the feet. If left untreated, it can cause paralysis of legs.

Same was the case with a 64 year old lady, who had undergone this surgery for lumbar canal stenosis and post-surgery had developed Meningitis due to infection. Meningitis is an inflammation of the fluid and membrane surrounding the spinal cord. Meningitis can be fatal, it cause recurrent convulsions, loss of consciousness, paralysis and loss of life at times. Hence when admitted to Apollo she had to be put on ventilator, while she was being clinically managed for the complication.

The case was typically critically because not only had the patient recently undergone a neurosurgical procedure but had also developed infection. Patient was in deep state of coma with persistent seizures for initial 4-5 days. Such patient usually carry very bad prognosis.

After clinical management at Apollo for 27 days the patient was discharged. She is now free from any neurological disorders and will only have to come for follow ups checks as a precaution.

The most common cause of spinal stenosis is osteoarthritis, the gradual wear and tear that happens to your the over time. Spinal stenosis is common because osteoarthritis begins to cause changes in most people’s spines by age 50. That’s why most people who develop symptoms of spinal stenosis are 50 or older. Women have a higher risk of developing spinal stenosis than men.
