A whopping 91% of Delhi, Gurugram use phones just before bedtime

Wakefit.co, one of India’s largest D2C sleep and home solutions providers released the 5th edition of its Great Indian Sleep Scorecard (GISS) 2022. The report shares insights into the sleep patterns of Indians. While analyzing the data, some interesting revelations about the sleeping habits of Delhi and Gurugram have come to the fore. It is astonishing to learn that 91% of Delhi-Gurugram use their phones before going to bed every night. This definitely seems to have taken a toll on their day-to-day activities, as 54% of respondents said they felt sleepy during work hours.

 Doom Scrolling apparently hasn’t affected their sleep, as findings indicate that only 26% of respondents fear they have insomnia. This seems slightly assuring, as last year this figure was almost double (47%). Additionally, 44% of respondents think that avoiding digital devices before sleep will improve their sleep health.

 Late owls, early birds

Surprisingly, late sleep did not seem to affect the routine of people as 60% of Delhi and Gurugram population managed to get up early (from 6 to 8 am). This is a significant jump compared to 31% of early risers last year. It is alarming that the sleeping hours of people have reduced. However, experts have been able to heave a sigh of relief as 60% of the city said they felt fresh when they woke up in the morning. Interestingly, the body clock of the national capital is running in sync with the changing sleep patterns.

Binge-watching affecting sound sleep

Fondness for OTT media seems to have increased among Delhi and Gurugram, as 25% of the respondents said they went to bed late because of binge-watching. With 33% of the city browsing through social media late at night, digital addiction seems to tighten its hold on the nocturnal netizens. We can no longer point fingers at the work-from-home culture for sleep disruption, as people who felt their office required them to stay up till late had come down to 31% from 45% last year. Given that 35% of the respondents were IT professionals, it indicates rising sleep deprivation among this demographic as compared to other professions.

Need for optimum sleep space

52% of respondents said they made their beds as soon as they woke up in the morning indicating an affinity for well-maintained bed spaces. Moreover, the awareness of a relaxed environment in the bedroom seems to have increased as 44% of respondents acknowledged that their bedroom environment has been impacting their sleep. Post-pandemic, people have become accustomed to staying at home, making it a space for all recreational activities and work as well. Dedicated sleeping spaces have become essential to draw that boundary between living and workspaces.

 The Great Indian Sleep Scorecard is an ongoing survey recording sleep patterns, and the edition for 2022 received over 30,000 responses, taken between March 2021 and February 2022. The study covers respondents across the age spectrum and multiple demographic groups in Indian cities. Over the last 5 years, the survey has received more than 2 lakh responses.
