A Plan for CMAAO Countries for reducing the incidence of HIV by 75% in 5 years, and by 90% by 2030.
· Today, antiretroviral drugs combined into a single pill taken once a day can enable a person living with HIV to achieve a nearly normal lifespan.
· Antiretrovirals can treat HIV, maintain the health of an individual, and prevent transmission of the virus.
· People living with HIV when use antiretrovirals to achieve and maintain a durably undetectable level of virus, they do not sexually transmit HIV. This prevention strategy, is known as Undetectable = Untransmittable, or U=U.
· Antiretrovirals in pregnant women living with HIV can prevent perinatal transmission of the virus.
· ART is recommended for all HIV-infected pregnant women to decrease the rate of perinatal HIV transmission as well as to treat the mother.
· For HIV-negative people at risk for HIV, taking a single pill daily as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV by 99%.
· Emergency post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, also can prevent HIV from becoming established in the body if begun within three days of exposure and taken for an additional 28 days.
· NIH continue to pursue the development of a safe and effective vaccine to prevent HIV, and a cure for those living with HIV.
· Ending the HIV Epidemic must take place “Community by Community.”
· Ensure that hardly reached communities — including the transgender, black, gay, injection drug, and sex worker communities — benefit from these strategies.
· Test and treat policy: ART (potent three rugs combination) is recommended for all HIV-infected individuals regardless of CD4 cell count.
