New Delhi, April 16, 2019:

Fortis Healthcare, the official healthcare partner for the IPL team Delhi Capitals, organized a special event where they unveiled the symbol for organ donation. The team players Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Kagsio Radabada and Trent Boult were present at the event. Other guests included Dr Samir Parikh, Director, Department of Behavioural Sciences and Mental Health, Fortis Healthcare and Dr. Sandeep Dewan, Director, Critical Care, FMRI & FEHI.

While many people across India have been sensitised about organ donation, its importance and the need to donate organs, there was no symbol or identity which could be related to the cause. A cause so important and sensitive could only be successful when it resonates and emanates from the collective conscious of the audience and so for this phase we called upon the nation for their participation. The idea was to crowdsource a symbol for organ donation. Thousands of entries were received from across the country and after multiple rounds of judging, we had our winning entry and finally derived the Organ Donation Symbol – Three dots, signifying continuity of life.

It is an identity designed to honour this noble act. Using this symbol, an organ donation flag has been created. This flag will henceforth be used as a shroud to give the donors a heroic send-off as a mark of honour for the donor and a moment of pride for the family as an act of gratitude by Fortis.

Shikhar Dhawan, Cricketer, Delhi Capitals said, “I want to request everyone to become an organ donor. I myself am an organ donor and have already pledged to donate my eyes. The ability to help someone live a better life – there is no better feeling than this. Organ donation reflects humanity’s capability to give another life after we have lived our own. It is an initiative which is very close to my heart and I urge everyone to become an organ donor. I am happy to be a part of Fortis ‘More to Give’ initiative.”

Ms Jasrita Dhir, Head, Marketing & Brand, Fortis Healthcare said, “A red drop symbolises blood donation, a red ribbon – AIDS awareness; an initiative that saves and transforms at the least 8 lives needed a symbol. The three dots or an ellipse denoting continuity of life came out of a humble effort contributed by the community, to be used by the community at large. We are grateful to the families of the organ donors to whom we presented flags bearing the Organ Donation symbol as a mark of respect and are thankful to the players of Delhi Capitals for lending their support to a cause as worthy as Organ Donation.”

Speaking about the unveiling of the symbol Rajdeepak Das, MD India and Chief Creative Officer, Leo Burnett India said “This is an extremely noble Humankind initiative – and is exactly the kind of work we at Leo Burnett are proud of. For the first time a shroud has been designed as a mark of honour for organ donors. We hope that this will bring about a change in the attitude towards organ donation and organ donors.”

The demand for organ transplantation has rapidly increased all over the world during the past decade due to the increased incidence of vital organ failure, the rising success and greater improvement in post-transplant outcomes. Half a million lives are lost every year, in India, for the want of organs. That’s a life lost every minute. Only a few thousands would get organs. As a leading healthcare provider, Fortis Healthcare pledged to take up the cause of creating awareness around the loss of lives that happen for the want of organs.  Fortis’ ‘More to Give’ initiative seeks to mobilise the nation in this direction. Through this initiative, Fortis Healthcare has tried to sensitise people towards the ever-growing need-gap and also make them contribute to the solution – by pledging to become a donor and by spreading the word, far and beyond. Since the launch of Fortis “More to Give” Campaign in 2016, India’s Organ donation rate has significantly improved from 0.5 to 0.88.
