 New Delhi, 20 July 2019:

The Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) condoles the death of former Chief Minister of Delhi and senior Congress leader Smt. Sheila Dikshit. An exemplary leader, she transformed the face of Delhi in her 15-year term. She fought a prolonged illness before her demise at Delhi’s Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. Smt. Dikshit underwent a heart surgery in France last year. She was 81.

Offering his condolences, Padma Shri Awardee, Dr K K Aggarwal, President, HCFI, said, “Smt. Sheila Dikshit was a leader par excellence and the senior-most Congresswoman in its Delhi unit. Not only was she adept in politics but also a great speaker. We, at HCFI, mourn the loss of the tallest leader of the Congress bastion. She was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Apart from undergoing surgery in France, she had an angioplasty in November 2012 and was treated for infection some time ago. She suffered two cardiac arrests before passing away. The fact that she battled her health problems unflinchingly till the end shows her indomitable spirit. May God give her near and dear ones enough strength to cope with the loss.”

About Smt. Sheila Dikshit

Smt. Sheila Dikshit served as Delhi’s chief minister for three consecutive terms between 1998 and 2013. She was credited for Delhi’s growing infrastructure including roads and flyovers, a less polluted city, better public transport system as well as development on the health and educational fronts. After her stint as Delhi chief minister, she was sworn in as Kerala’s Governor in 2004, but resigned in just six months. She started off as a reluctant politician, and cut her political teeth assisting her father-in-law, a veteran Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Uma Shankar Dikshit, who was a minster in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet.
