“67-year-old men was diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage and accelerated hypertension at the same time”

Gurugram, November 12, 2021:

Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Gurugram successfully treated a 67-year-old man with a rare combination of brain hemorrhage .i.e.  subarachnoid hemorrhage and heart attack at the same time. The patient came to the hospital with a complaint of headache and chest discomfort. After several blood tests, brain scanning, and evaluation it was found that the patient was suffering from internal bleeding inside his head which was the major reason for the headache. It was also found that he also suffered a heart attack which made the situation even worse, resulting in blackouts, chest pain, and other discomforts.

The Cardiologist  & Neurosurgeon at Manipal Hospital, Gurugram performed a two-day procedure to successfully treat the patient and tackle this extremely risky case. At first, surgery called intracranial coiling was performed to control the patient’s internal bleeding inside his head . Usually, in brain bleeding cases any blood thinner medicines have to be  stopped immediately  to avoid further bleeding i.e hemorrhage but, in this case, the same could not be done as the patient had suffered a heart attack which made the surgery even more complicated. Despite the risk factors involved, the surgery was performed successfully.

The doctors only intended to treat the bleeding inside the patient’s head at first, but the patient’s heart condition deteriorated due to chest pain and low blood pressure. As a result, Dr. Monik Mehta and his team opted to perform lifesaving heart procedure i.e. coronary angioplasty thereafter to save his life. The doctors were cautious throughout the two-day long treatment as the blood thinning medicines required during and after the heart operation could have triggered the bleeding inside the head again, which could have threatened the life of the patient. But in the experienced hands of the doctors, the bleeding was controlled successfully, and the heart surgery  i.e angioplasty was performed.

Speaking on the severity of the case Col (Dr.) Monik Mehta, Chief & Sr Consultant Interventional Cardiology, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram said, “When the patient came to the hospital, he already had a history of severe headaches and blackout. This was a complicated case because the line of treatments for both these surgeries is different and requires immense experience. The treatment modality was very critical, as any wrong treatment could have harmed either the heart or the brain. However, both surgeries were successful, and the patient was saved. He is now doing well and is leading a healthy and normal life.”
