Preparations / Modifications related to COVID-19 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi

In supersession  of its earlier order No F-23/Misc/ COVID-19/DGHS/ NHC/2020/Pt-IV/4526-4534 dated 03.04.2020 , Director General of Health Services , Government of National Capital of Delhi has partially modified following changes vide its present order No F-23/Misc/COVID-19/DGHS /NHC/2020/Pt-IV/4613-20 , Dated 06/04/20 (copy attached ).

Main Points :

  • Sir Ganga Ram Hospital situated at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Marg has designated its affiliated hospital Sir Ganga Ram Kolmet Hospital at Pusa Road as Covid19 only Hospital as approved by Government of Delhi.   All suspected /proved cases of Covid19 will be admitted in this hospital.
  • Main Sir Ganga Ram Hospital at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Marg, Rajinder Nagar is now Non Covid19 Hospital.  No suspected / proved cases of Covid19 will be admitted till further orders.
  • Properly isolated and dedicated Fever Clinic will be run both at main hospital as well as affiliated Sir Ganga Ram Kolmet hospital.
  • So far only 3 cases were found to be positive between 30.03.2020 till 02.04.2020.
  • 108 healthcare workers involved in the care of these patients were quarantined in the interest of health workers, their families and society at large.

So far only one quarantined worker has tested positive and has no symptoms yet.  At the end of two weeks of quarantine, all quarantine staff will be tested for COVID-19.

Details are as follows :-

In order to provide care to our patients, Virtual OPD has been started and this will continue even after the Lock Down is over in order to reduce the burden of people in the OPD. All patients who are suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 will be treated at Sir Ganga Ram Kolmet Hospital, Pusa road , a 42 bedded facility, which is affiliated with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital , Rajinder Nagar , New Delhi  (Main Campus ) will be   admitting patients  who are not suspected or confirmed cases of  COVID-19.  Therefore, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital main campus on Sir Ganga  Ram Hospital road will be non COVID-19 hospital and will be admitting patients other than COVID-19. However, in view of Pandemic all precautions will be taken care by all the staff as per guidelines of government.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is recognized for doing COVID-19 testing and will adopt any innovative testing recommended by ICMR.

OPD services at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital :

Since national lock down, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has established a triage area just before Emergency unit.   Any patient having fever or flu like illness are directed to attend dedicated Fever Clinic and examined.  Patients are tested for COVID-19 as per guidelines of the Government. If patients require admission they were admitted in other dedicated hospitals and hence onwards they will be admitted in our affiliated hospital i.e. Sir Ganga Ram Kolmet Hospital at Pusa Road.

All other patients seeking consultations are seen in the emergency by Casualty Medical Officers and various specialists and are also admitted in the hospital, if required.

Virtual OPD
Consultants of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital are providing follow up consultations on telephone through various apps. Now Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has got its own dedicated Virtual OPD Services to provide this service, and it will continue even after Lock Down period to reduce the burden on indoor OPD.

Facility Provided for COVID19 TESTING
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is recognized for doing this test.  So far only 32 tests have been done and 3 patients were found positive.  One patient came in the evening in Fever Clinic on 29.03.2020 and his nasal swab was sent for COVID-19 testing because of suspicion and patient went home.  His test came positive on 30.03.2020 and accordingly District Surveillance Officer was informed to take necessary action.  Patient, as per information of our Nodal Officer, is recovering at dedicated Corona Hospital at Jhajjar.

Two other patients were admitted through emergency unit.

First patient, a 72 years old lady, was suffering from chronic kidney failure which was aggravated by some infection and she was on dialysis for almost more than a month and was referred to our hospital from Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, New Delhi for further management  and was admitted under Critical Care Medicine on 30.03.2020.  Her Xray showed evidence of pneumonitis and therefore she was tested for COVID-19 which was reported positive on 31.03.2020 and she was shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after informing District Surveillance Officer. As per our information her relatives took her home against medical advice from RML Hospital and she died at home.

Second patient a 79 years old lady was admitted because of massive upper gastro intestinal  bleeding under Department of Gastroenterology.  She was in hemorrhagic shock. She required respiratory support for one day.  Later she also developed pneumonia like illness and tested for COVID-19 and reported positive on 02.04.2020.  Many health workers got involved in taking care of these patients by this time.

Thus in order to take care of health of health workers and their family and society at large, 108 health workers had been quarantined. Later seven more workers were added to the list according to their disclosure.

108 health care workers comprises of 24 doctors, 72 nurses, 6 technicians, 4 Ward boys, 1 Cook, 1 Pantry boy were quarantined.  85 of them are quarantined at their own home and rest are quarantined in the hospital / hostel. Till now all quarantined staff are asymptomatic. However, as per guidelines, after five days of exposure we have started testing these quarantined staff.

So far 6 have been tested and one technician of Gastroenterology who was very closely involved in assisting endoscopy of the patient has been found to be positive. However, he is also asymptomatic, but as a precautionary measure he is being admitted in our designated COVID-19 hospital i.e. Sir Ganga Ram Kolmet Hospital at Pusa Road.

Post Lock Down Preparation

Our Corona Containing Committee is making guidelines for running OPD and IPD services after post lock down. Of course we shall be observe guidelines laid down by the Government.
