The senior population is rapidly growing in numbers. Elderly people are more prone to develop chronic problems affecting their health and quality of life. The families of the elderly need to be prepared, and health care system suited to support and take care of these geriatric problems.

The health problems faced by elderly can vary widely. They can have age related decline in vision, hearing, cognition, mobility or immune function. But at times, they are often affected by chronic conditions like arthritis, kidney disease, urinary problems, dementia, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.

It is important that elderly patient get required attention from their families and also maintains a regular contact with health care system to manage their chronic conditions and achieve health targets. This will ensure a reasonably good quality of life.

In addition to healthy food habits and healthy lifestyle, elderly are best benefitted by geriatric health care, which address all the health issues of the senior people. It is focussed care directed towards preventing and managing their problems by qualified health care professionals.

Health tips for elderly

  1. Eat healthy balanced diet.
    2. Exercise- stay active.
    3. Check and correct your vision.
    4. Ensure good bone and joint health.
    5. Maintain good hearing.
    6. Regular visits to doctor for known health problems, and at least annual preventive health checks.
    7. Regular medications and preventive vaccinations (Flu, pneumococcal, zoster).
